Banks iDash on drivers grab rail. I wanted a custom pod on the AC vent, but my patience and skill level just isn't there. Custom pod places didn't want a project that small, and block8head on the web was IMO, sketchy (send me money, I'll make it, you might get it). This was just nuts and bolts, I'm happy, and I don't think it degrades the truck. Plus, a new cover from parts is less than 3 dollars and the whole thing is reversible to go back to factory.
Remove lower grab rail cover. 10mm bolt under that cover, remove. Replace with an M6x1.0 threaded rod. Run a self locking nut up and tighten.
I used an M6 coupler as a handle and bent the rod slightly to be parallel with the bottom of the handle. Drilled a hole in the cover, and replaced it with the stud sticking out. Trimmed to length, and threaded an Arkon 17mm ball onto the stud with small rubber o-rings as a cushion. The Arkon ball is conveniently an M6x1.0 thread after removing from the amps plate.
The cup is a VDO 240-101. Remove the mount, leaving just the cup. I filled the ridges and one side where the mount goes with body filler and sanded smooth. 3 coats of Rustoleum Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze paint ( 249131 ) and primer was applied. It's a close match. I put a 17mm camera mount though the other mount hole and placed a locknut on the back side, inside the cup.
Ran the wire from the OBD port up to the A pillar behind the side defrost vent cover, into the cup.
The whole project took less than a day. Part list below.
