Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the tfi module. Would fire ONLY when the key was turned to the start position. when released it would die. Hope this helps
It turns over but wont start. It started with starting but then running REALLY rough. It sounds like I aint getting any spark, but I haven't had anybody to turn the key for me to check for sure. It wont start at all now though. It is getting depressing. I have poured a lot of money into this thing since I got it a month ago. The worst thing is I got it from a good "friend". I think I might have to take it to a shop. Might as well. I can't keep spending all this money on things I don't need to replace. Thanks a lot for all your replies! I really apreciate all the help you guys keep giving me.
I do have spark. I do have fuel. So that leads me to believe the timing must be off somehow. I don't have a timing light. When I pulled the codes yesterday it said 626-629-636. This thing should run. I really don't understand. Thanks guys...
That still dosent mean that the TFI mod. isent bad. It has two phases, one fires while its trying to start and the run phase take over when it starts and you release the key, So if it trys to start then dies when you release the key it can still be bad. DW
well it doesn't really give a hard effort at starting though. Every once in a while it will sound like it is doing something other than turning over. That is it. There haven't been any promising starting sounds coming out of there. Also would the TFI get worse and worse? Or would it just die?
OK so I have the distributor off. I am looking at the chilton manual and it says you can test the TFI and the stator by checking the resistance of the stator. Here are the steps. Maybe somebody could desipher them for me...
1) remove the distributor from engine(done)
2) remove TFI module from the distributor(where is it? How do I do it? What does it look like?)
3) Inspect the distributor terminals, ground screw, and stator wiring for damage. ( Self explanatory)
4) Measure resistance of the stator assembly using and ohmeter. If the ohmmeter reading is 800-975 ohms, the stator is OK, but the TFI module must be replaced. If the ohmeter reading is less than 800 or greater than 975 the TFI module is ok but the stator module must be replaced. (Where do I measure from?)
5) repair as neccassary and install the TFI module and distibutor.
I wish this stupid chilton had some pictures for each part. At least something that would let you know what you are looking for.
The TFI module on your '92 is not mounted to the distributor. its on the driver's inner fender between the electronics distro box and the firewall. Its grey plastic and has a 6-pin connector in one end. Its set in a large aluminum heat sink and is about 4" long and about 1.5" wide. Sounds like you have instructions for a Duraspark ingition system there and you have TFI-IV or EEC-IV ignition. To check the PIP stator sensor on the remote mounted ICM ignition units there is a long drawn out set of instructions in the Haynes manual that I won't post here for sheer length. (I know, hasn't kept me from being long-winded before). I would cross reference to the Haynes manual if your Chiltons doesn't list these instructions.
Well she is headed to the shop on Friday. Thanks for the help though guys. I will be sure to comeback here the next time something goes wrong with this Ford.
