Navigation

Just bought the 2021 F250 Lariat 6.7 diesel. It didn't come with navigation, but my old truck had it. Can you add it to the truck and if so, what would it cost? I can plug in my phone and use apple car play, but I really like the navigation function.

Welcome to the forum.

There are several vendors selling the Ford NAV module, to swap out the existing non-NAV module, in the rear of the SYNC-3 head unit.

The NAV module is provided as a vehicle-specific configuration, unique to the VIN.

The installation looks easy enough.

From what I've seen its about $1k. Not worth it in my opinion.

One odd thing about NAV is that it seems to be required for HD Radio, I'm not sure why. I really didnt want the option to be honest but was on the truck I bought off the lot, I find myself using it more and more out of convience of not plugging up the phone and I tend to go places with poor cell reception, plus its nice to have HD Radio.

I've got some vehicles with OEM Nav, some without, each has its benefits and shortcomings. In remote areas with spotty cell service the factory nav is superior in my experience. The phone nav apps get updates more often and have a lower buy in price. Both seem to function well enough. I don't think the factory nav is enough better that I'd spend the $1K mentioned above to add it though.

I did not order it because I have and like a large screen, Garmin Nuvi unit that I swap into any vehicle I drive. It is user friendly, updateable, and has years of my saved destination maps.

Do you have the 8 inch screen? If so Apple CarPlay or Android Auto will work for you, giving you Navigation from your smart phone.

The factory nav is the worst thing about my truck. I use Google maps or waze from android auto if I have to actually navigate anywhere. The factory nav is terrible.

My factory navigation went from the worst I’ve ever used in any device or vehicle to pretty good just by updating the maps and firmware (unsure if fw did anything). It was free and made a huge difference on how mine works. Still not as good as what you’ll find on your phone, but a massive step up from nearly useless to usable.

I updated about 2 months ago. Still tried to take me down closed roads, or do illegal U-Turns.

I skipped the factory NAV because I knew I was going aftermarket anyways. Why pay for it twice was my thought. Threw in a Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX. Cost with install kits was cheaper than the factory option, and it is a better system IMO. I can also watch TV, DVDs, play video games, use it in motion, and a host of other features...and gives great options for stereo upgrades in the future as well.

Are you opposed to aftermarket, or does it have to be factory?

last week I needed to go to Jacksonville FL to get my bed sprayed with Linex. I put in the address of the Spray Place I followed the navigation and when it said you have arrived I wasn't at the Spray Place. I got on My Phone and I was 3 miles away from where I needed to be. Don't think I'll be trusting the onboard nav.

Nothing better for operational safety than vehicles having games and video playing in view of the operator.
