I respect the opinions of the people on this site since most are knowledgeable and willing to give their opinions so I thought I would ask about ceramic coatings for your vehicles? I just finished painting my 62 Flare Side, polished it and am now wondering if I should wax it or put a ceramic coating on. The wax works for short periods of time and doesn't protect as well as ceramics do but is easy to put on and off. Ceramic coatings are difficult to put on yet protect up to a year, have great UV protection, sheet water and mud off yet if you make a mistake you're stuck with it for up to a year.
Anyone have experience with them? If so, what do you think?
Don't put anything on it if you just finished painting it! Paint needs to breathe for a few months for all the solvents to finish working their way out, especially if it's a garage queen and doens't get much sunlight. If you seal in the solvent that's left you run the risk of the paint delaminating.
I called a professional detailer to get a quote on one of my cars. For what they call 2 stage paint correction to get rid of the swirls and a 2 year ceramic coat it's going to be in the neighborhood of $800. Certainly a lot of money, but it is cheaper than paint work as I'm sure you're aware. I think the 5 year was something like $1200. Something to think about if you're not comfortable going at it yourself.
