Hi there, I have a 97 ford aerostar full size with the electronic 4x4.
I"'m trying to make it into a 4x2 with very little luck.
I have allready removed the cv axles which were shot, and cut them so i could use the ends for my hub splines.
I then removed the front driveshaft. I thought this was going to be all i would need but was i ever wrong.
After starting the van and putting into gear, Now only the front transfer case spline is spinning, and no power going to the rear drive shaft. The light continues to blink 4x4.
after little research some said to pull out the fuses for the 4x4, i did that and it made the lights go out but still all power is going to the transfer case and what would be front drive shaft.
Am I completely screwed? is there no way to make the trani give its power strickly to the rear shaft?
any help is appreciated.
thanks
thanks for the reply. van say its electronic four wheel drive. I'm confused as how it actually works, i know normally it runs on rear wheel drive and when you begin to get stuck you can feel the awd come on.
thats why it seems so strange to me that by disconnecting the front shaft that it wont drive at all. You are right though there isn't anything in the vehicle to select the awd it comes on all electronic
I thought they were front wheel drive and when they got stuck the rears kicked in? Is the motor mounted transverse or front to back? You may be simpler and easier to just buy new shafts to install. You may need to check on an aerostar forum as this is an econoline forum.
thank you for the info. although i hope that is not the case. sorry if i posted this in the wrong place, new here and still trying to find my way around. I will see if i can find the aerostar section and post there.
thanks for your help

FWIW...
AEROstar was a rear-wheel-drive platform, Ford's initial attempt at the "mini-van" market back in '86. They also had the "awd" versions.
Ford later added the WINDstar front-wheel-drive platform , much more in-line with the original Pentastar branded units.
