Just got myself a new 2020 F-150 with the 2.7 ecoboost. I traded in my 2019 leased F-150 on the new truck. The 2019 was an XLT Sport model. The 2020 is an XLT FX4 model. The 2020 is actually EPA rated at 1 MPG less city/hwy/combined than the 2019.
I know it needs to be broken in but the first tank on the 2020 averaged 16.7 MPG hand calculated. My 2019 was always in the 18 to 21 MPG depending on the season. My 2nd tank on the 2020 came in at 18.0 MPG. Much happier with this. Anyone else with a 2020 FX4 2.7 ecoboost engine. What are your MPH numbers if I may ask.
I have the 3.5 ECO in my 2020 FX4. I get between 18 and 20 most of the time. I tried some ethanol free gas to see if it made any difference, but it didn't help gas mileage, just cost more money.
Our 2015 3.5L EcoBoost is roughly 18.5 MPG lifetime average. However, when we're on the freeway cruising at 65, it runs between 21 and 22. Not apples to apples with your 2.7, but I'm guessing there are some mitigating factors?

That has been my experience, too. I've tried it several times in Oklahoma, since it is fairly common to find ethanol-free gas there...but it is only 87 octane. I normally run mid-grade in my truck.
It is documented that using the higher octane will net you a little better MPG in the ecoboost....but not nearly enough to overcome the added cost of buying the highest octane fuel.
I have a similar story to yours OP. I traded a 2018 xlt (300A package supercab 3:55 4x4) for a 2020 sport package 2.7 4x4(supercab) and I am somewhat disappointed in my new truck. My old one was lively, it felt like a mustang in truck form to put it mildly and it got great gas mileage despite the fact that I abused it. I bought the new one expecting the same thing but so far, it has been a letdown. The power is just not there and neither is the gas mileage that I enjoyed with my old one. I am wondering if Ford detuned the new trucks at all? I have searched the internet over and can't find anything, is anyone else experiencing this in a 2020, the truck works great but just seems dead.
