Ford 9” width?

Build on my ‘56 F-100 is coming along. I’m ready to put a Ford 9” on. I’m going to use stock rear fenders and I put a 4” tub on the bed. I have a TCI 4 Link set up outside the frame rails and it’s going to ride on Shockwaves. I have a Ford 9” out of a ‘63-‘72 F-100 that measures about 61 1/4 inches long. I think it’s too long for my setup. I want to run 20 or 18 x10” rims. Anybody have a similar set up that can recommend a good length
Thank you.

On my ‘56 I installed the TCI 4 link also , I had an extra 9” for a ‘66 mustang im working on also but kept the 8” in the car instead, the rear measures 52 1/4” and I put the mini tubs in also to get wider tires under the stock fenders, right now I have old L-60’s and they look lost inside the fenders, real happy how it came out

If it’s not a huge hassle for you I’d really appreciate it if you could measure it. Thank you.

Your truck looks awesome, thank you. Ok, that’s good info and the pics very helpful. So 52 1/4 inches flange to flange and probably around 57 1/4 axle to axle. Sound about right?

You can't just solicit a number from someone else when you are not even sure of your tire and wheel combination. If your going to spend the money to get a narrowed rear and axles you need to do it right for your application. This means you need to figure out what wheel size you want, which means total width and backspacing, diameter (height) is not as critical on these trucks for determining axle width but it can play a part if you run a tall tire as the stock fender taper at the bottoms of the opening. In addition to that you need specs on the tire you want to run on the wheel you choose. Different tires have different bulge characteristics which all plays a part in axle width and fitment in your wheel well (fender). It sounds like you don't have a lot of experience doing this so I highly recommend you pick your wheel and tire first and either buy them or get all the specs so you can make cardboard prototypes to get accurate measurements to center your choice in the wheel well. If you don't go about this properly I guarantee Murphy will pay you a visit that will get expensive and/or cause you to make concessions you will not be happy with because it will not fit your vision you have for your truck.

Good luck and please do it right the first time because doing it once hurts the pocketbook but having to do it a second time really sucks.

Ok today i just could measure the rearend housingflange to flange which is appr. 50 1/2" . This what i did for my steup.
I allready had the Wheels,
If you will order Wheels you can choose your BS so maybe you can handle with another rearend width.
I had noch chance to remove the wheels today, but when i have i can measure wheelmountingsurface to wheelmountingsurface.

If it were me and I was going to narrow a rearend anyways I would do some simple measuring ( fender width , inside room before 4 link interference ) choose your rim and tire and do the rearend accordingly . If you are not planning on narrowing a rearend you " need " to choose your rearend first . Will the outside 4 link not limit or eliminate the inside space requiring a tub ?

After looking through my pics it appears as though even with the outside 4 link you will be able to utilize a tub .

My c4 mount looks to be wider than a 4 link would be . As you can see this is very close to as wide as will fit inside with very little tub needed

Good advise, thank you. I drive my buddies crazy cause I measure, measure again, solicit input (like I’m doing here) then measure again. Murphy and I have spent time together and it’s NEVER any fun. Thanks again

I was going to send you a similar pic showing there’s plenty of room with the tubs. I think I will take your and others advice and start by deciding on my tire/wheel combination and build the Rearend from there. Thank you for your response!
