Larger Than FL-1A

Back in the day-way back(1970s) I used to run a filter on my 302s and 351W which was longer, higher capacity than the FL-1A. I worked at an auto parts store then and found this filter in the inventory. I've been out of the car hobby until recently, when I couldn't pass on a cherry 78 F150 Lariat. My old memory doesn't bring up the number for that filter. Does anyone know this filter? Thanks.

I remember those... I think there was a Fram version as well. Problem was, I don't think the antidrain-back valve in the Motorcraft/Ford part was the same. And my FE didn't like it much. I also remember having LESS oil pressure at idle when hot than the standard FL1A.

The physical size of the filter may or may not have any relation to the filtering capacity of the filter.

A few years ago, someone else was curious about using a physically larger filter, but before buying, actually wrote to Purolator and asked about the differences. As it turned out, according to Purolator, the smaller filter actually had better filtering capacity than the larger filter.

So best to just use what is recommended for your engine.

I agree size has nothing to do with filtering ability. You have to do your research.
I do not agree it is best just to blindly use what is recommended. Yes, that is safe and a guaranteed fit, but inside different brand lines you'll find that what is recommended varies based on price point, construction materials, and manufacturers thoughts.
All that said, the FL299 should be similar performance and hold about another half quart of oil.
If you want larger capacity and better performance, you need to turn to the Baldwin B7311-MPG. It has much better filtering specs over any Motorcraft offering at 5um nominal, and holds over 30 grams of dirt. That would be my choice for an oversized FL1-A if I was looking for performance and extra oil capacity.

Was doing some reading and apparently the FL-299 filters down to 32 microns, the Fl-1A down to 20 microns and the Fram XG8A down to 5 microns if memory serves right. I am currently running the XG8A on my '93 4.9l and it's been doing a decent job as far as I can tell.

Back in the day I used Motorcraft CFL-1 oil filters. Then I was told the FL1-A was the upgrade.
