So I just had a mechanic install all new shoes and pads front and back along with new e brake cables. Got it back it drove fine brakes felt great. I drive this daily up a mountain pass for about twenty minutes in each direction for work. First day up the pass it stunk of brakes at the top. Back left was super hot and everything else seems good. The next trip hub and drum are hot but not as hot as the first day, little brake smell. Third day I take it home and loosen the adjustment quite a bit. I notice it seems to be rubbing in one spot on the drum.. drive it up the pass and it’s all good nice and cool no stink. I drive Back up come back home and back up and it stinks of brakes again and it’s super hot.....? What gives.
If it's drums, it's going to be the long shoe was installed facing forward, long shoe always goes to the back or you ebrake it adjusted to tight and thats what is dragging.
Starting in 99 all superduty trucks should have disc brakes in the rear, if you have disc brakes the ebrake could still be adjusted to tight but the shoe placement would not apply, most likely a c clamp was used to compress the piston in the caliper, Ford's for some reason do not like that at all, the caliper is probably locked up or the brake line (rubber) is bad.
Had to replace the disc drums on rear of my f-450, parking brake cables are stuck, so just did away with parking brake. Seems to be a common problem, cables get rusty, then you set the parking brake, and then it burns up your brakes.
We replaced all cables and housing, brought it back to the mechanic and he loosened the adjustment on the drum again. Just like I did. He wanted to see for himself... did the same thing.. smells slightly of brakes and lugs are warm now not hot. I’m guessing I’m just wearing down the shoes and eventually they will be fine. He wants to take another look....
