Unhappy Hot Brakes

Okay, I let the wife borrow the truck today, and she ended up driving about a mile with the parking brake ON. Well, needless to say they were smoking pretty good. My question is, how bad did she hurt them. Should I replace everything or will it be okay since it was only a mile. I had just had the drums turned and new shoes put on 2 weeks ago if that helps any.

Thanks

Drive it around for a few days and see how it feels. Check for any unusual pulsing, a sign or warped rotors. Don't know if drums can warp too.

My godmother used to drive her car several miles on a regular basis with the parking brake on. Didn't seem to hurt the car, just wore the brakes out sooner.

I tow a lot and have had the brakes on too much in hilly country to the point where the brakes are mush, and it didn't seem to hurt my truck, just made for an exciting ride.

I am not a brkae expert and do not know the technical likelihood of damage. All I can say is I have seen brakes overheated before and usually the only problem is rotor warping, which normally has nothing to do with the parking brake. Also you see plenty of people on the freeway riding their brakes, bet they get hot> I assume no damage is done since these people persist in doing it.

Just my uneducated opinion,

Jim Henderson

i wouldn't worry about it at all, i did the same thing but did not realize it until i saw white smoke billowing out of the rear wheel wells. I pulled into a fast food joint and let them cool. And were fine after that.

Thumbs up Hot Brakes

You should be fine. I have done this myself a few times. The drums are more durable than the rotors up front. I have never had any problems after. Also your front brakes do more of the work, something like 70/30. I say suck it up and don't say anything and get some points in the ole husband bank.

Thanks Guys! I havent noticed anything like pulsing, so I think all must be well. I definitely scored major points on this deal. Maybe I can get out of painting the house this summer....YEAH RIGHT!

Thanks
