So my truck should be getting delivered here pretty soon and I opted to skip the factory bed liner in order to get line-x. What kind of questions should I be asking the line-x shop to make sure they are going to do the job right? The hardware for the bed should be removed and replaced, correct? Should the bed LED's be removed and reinstalled, or just masked off? Also, I think I read on here that some people seal their beds before getting it lined. What is the purpose of doing that? Any cons? What do you seal it with. This is my first truck and I have seen some line-x horror stories before, so I want to go into this with some knowledge.
Personally I would want the LED box lights taken out before coating and re-installed. My factory bed liner coated over the bed bolts. I'm indifferent on that since they are external head shape. My old 2003 F-150 they removed the bolts which was good because if not the internal torx heads would have been filled in and would have been difficult to scrape out if ever needed to be removed. If you seal the bed it will hold water. If you plan to put on a topper or sealed tonneau cover sealing the bed might help keep dust from filtering up through the cracks.
Newer trucks have torque-to-yield bed bolts and they should not be removed. If removed, they are supposed to be replace with new bolts. You can ask to have them masked if you don't want them covered.
I just had my truck line-x’ed they removed the bolts, taped off the areas that do not get sprayed and taped the tailgate. I asked them about the bolts, they said that the ford dealer told them to remove them and torque the back down, I don’t remember the specs, sorry. They told me that if they spray the bed bolts you will never get them out if you have to, for what ever reason. If you tell them about the light I’m sure they will either remove them or tape them off. The store I went to worked with me and said that I could fill in the large spaces with body putty.
I had mine done a year ago about a month after I got the truck.I just had dude tell me what/how THEY do and asked questions from there.Turns out,he answered all my questions beforehand.I requested he leave the bed bolts in,and he was fine with that. You can razor cut around them if you ever need to take them out, otherwise why take the chance of them coming loose,as has been witnessed on this forum.Make sure they mask around the bed lights, and switch, and they should pull the tailgate screws out too.The bed sealing you are referring to I believe is that some guys have silicone sealed the seams at the floor and sides before getting it sprayed.Watch a vid and it will explain it pretty well.My guy was in Twin Falls,ID,and he was a 10 yr. guy working on a Sat.,so I felt pretty good about it.Do it,you'll love it.
If you’re not gonna run a tonneau, make sure to get the level with UV coating. They left my bed bolts in and sprayed over them, left the rubber plugs in the back of the bed in. I kinda wish they would have taped or removed those, they removed the box link brackets. They removed the bed lights but left the bed light switch in place and taped around it... could have done better there. They had overspray on the pull out step, make sure that’s taped up good. And if you have a 5th wheel prep, make sure they remove plastic rings and tape all of that up.
wished I would have been able to seal bed sides before spray as well. Didn’t realize you could see daylight.
mine was taken to line x by the dealer so I didn’t get the chance to ask questions.
Unless this is a new Line-X place they should know what to do without any input. The place that I used has been in business a long time and
when asked said they always remove and reuse the bed bolts without issue. They remove the tie downs, box link plates and mask everything else off (as far as I know). I wouldn't want them trying to pop the bed lights out, or anything that isn't easily removed, the chance of damage is too high.
The service manual does say that the bed bolts are not reusable, but many, maybe even most service departments actually do re-use them. Also, Fords instructions included with its 5th wheel prep package do not say to throw away the original bolts.
If you are worried about it ask them to spray over your bolts, or bring new bolts with you. My only suggestion of you re-use or use new bolts would be to check and re-torque them yourself. They will not come loose.
Just had my F150 done and I bought a "super Sealant" for $200 extra and well worth it maintains a SUPER shiny bed liner! Also, make sure they plug in your tailgate connector!
So you mean the portion of the bed that would be exposed if the tailgate was removed?
Yes. I'm going to borrow "Daddy454's" picture here, but the painted part between the bed and tailgate. If you haul any kind of gravel, sand, even mulch and such...it will scratch the crap out of that area.
If you don't haul anything like that, then I wouldn't worry about it.
