Out with my diesel and in with a new 7.3?

Hi everyone, I am thinking of picking up a new F-350 with the 7.3. I am having trouble finding out exact tow and payload specs on the trucks. One place says a max trailer of 15,000 lbs. And another says over 18k. The situation I am in is, I have a large 5th wheel. Its 43 ft. weighs in at 11,150 lbs. dry and gross' at 14,125 lbs. I am currently pulling with a highly modified 6.7 Cummins megacab. I know the Ford will not pull as good as any diesel, but I am confident that it will do the job well enough for my needs. We only take it on 3 long trips a year. The rest are just lake trips 30 miles away on the weekends during summer etc.

I have read through the other posts on here about towing and I feel confident a properly equipped truck would suit my needs. What do you guys think.

And just for info. I am wanting to get out of diesels for the same reasons as most people have listed here already. Extremely high cost of repairs, Having to deal with all the emissions or deleting and voiding warranty ETC. I guess to sum it up. I am just gun shy about the new diesels on the market.

Thanks for any all replys and suggestions.

With the right axle you should be good.

Welcome to FTE.

Ford makes all this info available.

https://www.ford.com/trucks/super-duty/models/f350-xl/

Settle on regular, supercab or crew cab, scroll down to the 7.3 gas section and see what axle ratios allow you to tow what you want.

Scroll down further for payload info.

Note the combinations that give you the payload and towing. When you go shopping, look at trucks that match. There are paylod stickers in each truck as well.

Thanks for the help. That was exactly what I needed. Looks like 4.30's and I will be more than good. Even 3.73's put me quite a bit over what Im towing.

Another question. Dies Ford have a VIN decoder available. When I was looking at Rams, I could copy the Vin and put in Rams database and it would show everything about the truck I was looking at. It makes it much easier to tell what rear end was in a truck etc. I tried searching but couldnt find anything definitive.

I agree that you would be in great shape with a properly equipped 7.3L with the 4.30 gears and the 18” or 20” AT tires. You’d lose some GVWR/Payload if you went with the all season tires, and depending on your cab configuration, you could lose 300-400lb with the 3.73’s. When you are talking about close to 3,000lbs of pin weight, the extra payload is a nice safety margin.

Pages 23-30 of this document have GVWR/Max payload for various wheel/tire/cab configs. It doesn’t explicitly show the gearing, but I know a 176” CCLB with 3.73’s gets the 11,500 GVRW, and switching it to 4.30 bumps it to 11,900 GVRW.
