Hi, I own a F100 1979 since a few years. At first, did not have much problem with knowing my speed with the cluster everything worked fine. Then I decided to change my transmission pan seal because it had some used and changed the cluster (from a ford bronco same year) because their was some feature that didn't work . Since then, I've noticed it takes a lot of time to know the speed from the cluster. Il changed the cluster speed cable connected to the transmission pan but it didn't change anything. I'm wondering what the problem could be. I've notice that when the car get hot enough, the cluster started to work but in low speed (0 to 60) the needle is moving and can't tell the correct speed. I've put some Formule F transmission fluid as recommanded . The level of fluid seams fine. Any idea? thanks
Two things could be wrong, the speedo driven gear in the tranny could have failed or the speedo head is bad. Disconnect the cable from the speedo head behind the dash and drive the truck a bit...does the cable turn as you drive? If you try holding onto the square end does it turn in your hand or can you stop it with your fingers? If no turns or turns jerkily/weakly, you may need a new speedo driven gear at the trans (easy fix.) If the cable turns solidly, you probably inherited a bad head unit and should swap your old unit back in.
Ozzie makes a good point... Ford changed to a Dexron type fluid in '76 (I think) - read your dipstick and use what it says to use.
Do not worry about the type F fluid in the transmission won't hurt anything and you just leave it in there. If anything it will give some additional life to a worn trans.
