Help with a C700 VIN number?

Brand new member here. Sorry.. but I'm another guy looking for help with a VIN number. I'm purchasing a C700, but the owner doesn't know much about it, and neither do I. I've always had a soft spot for these things, and the price is right! Thank in advance!

Chris

Welcome to FTE! The following will be from the Master Parts Catalog for model years '73-'79, A lot of it you already know, but doing it this way explains all the info for any viewer.

C70 = C700 gas

E = 361 2V XD FT gas V8. (XD = eXtra duty, or Heavy Duty. "X" can also mean "eXclusive", but that's not applicable to the 361.

V = Kentucy Truck Plant (all trucks like this after 9/69)

W25566 = 1975 series number

153 = 153" wheelbase

X = X doesn't show for '75 but is Tan in '76-'77, and Antique Ivory later.

C707 = C700 gas, 23,000lbs GVWR

4A8 = Standard cab. I don't have upholstery or seat info.

2 = Clark model 282V 5 speed direct transmission

E2M
E2 = Eaton model 16244 two speed rear axle, 17,500lbs capacity, 6.17/8.58 ratios
M = Ford front axle, 7,000lbs capacity with power steering

B76034 = B7 -- Ford of Canada Pacific District code
6034 -- special order number. Since you have engine, trans, axle & color codes it's something else. What, I do not know.

Before you buy:
--new brake drums are not available for these trucks

--what kind of wheels and tires does it have? If it has disc wheels and the front rim is tube type with a solid rim, you may have widowmaker wheels.

Wow, thanks for that! I appreciate it very much. Good to know about the drums. So I would imagine most bone yards are picked clean? Speaking of which, any good truck junk yards known for having lots of these trucks? Kinda like Bronco Graveyard?

As for the front wheels, this is what I got. Sorry, bad pic.. Its the only picture I have other than the vin plate.

Thanks again man!

I don't have the eye for the wheels like others here. Here are locking ring wheels. Safe if handled right. Tube type tires:

https://www.mylittlesalesman.com/196...00-coe-9498849

Widowmaker Firestone RH 5 degree. Unsafe at any speed. This guy has a lot of pics of them so you can see what they look like.

https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...nting.1083358/

Tubeless are going to be 22.5" wheels, and you'll see the tubeless valve stem in the wheel.

I don't see a lock ring on there, but I do see that it's a five lug, like the N-Series truck in another current thread here.

Also, is that door mounted marker light bezel from a '68-'72 F100? Shouldn't it say 700 on it?

I've always liked those trucks a lot too, and hope to have one someday. Good luck with it!

Yes, I don't know why it has the 100 emblem on there.. no idea! Ha ha. It is a six lug, just doesn't look like it int the picture, and there is a locking ring fortunately.

Chris

I'll be using this to haul hay for my small hay operation. It has a 14ft flatbed on it, and I'll pull my 20' trailer behind it. Best of luck with your new ride!

HI Chris,
It sounds like your truck will be working hard for sure. I'll be purchasing mine this week and it is currently a short wheelbase (135"), 20K mile fire truck that I will be converting to more of a highway friendly tow vehicle. I will be removing the fire equip. but hope to use a portion of the truck bed to create a cargo bed with a fifth wheel hitch. I'll probably be swapping in a different rear end and updating brakes, transmission etc. I'm looking forward to getting the project started. That might change after a a couple months though! HaHa

Here is pic of mine.

Looks like a clean one! That should be a fun project. I'd be interested to see what you do for the brake retrofit.

Here's a picture of mine with my wife driving it. You're is in a little better shape!
