Trying to help an old friend that has a 1995 F150 with a 302. Any help would be appreciated. His truck runs OK then it starts skipping and sputtering like crazy. We replaced the plugs, plug wires, rotor, EGR valve, removed the ECM and cleaned the connections (smelt OK) and reinstalled, none of this helped. You can clear the ECM memory it runs ok until you turn it off and restart then it starts spitting and sputtering like crazy. After running a while the check engine light comes on and start running ok again. Shut it off and it starts all over again. Would replace the ECM but don't want him to waste money if that does not fix it. Is there a way to troubleshoot this or is it surely the ECM going bad. Any advise would be appreciated.
miles, EGR could be gummed up and not closing fully, and needs cleaning.
For the DTC 334, pull and plug the vacuum line at the EGR valve. Back probe the EVP sensor to verify the reading is beween .2V and .67 VDC. If it is, re-attach the vacuum line, if it rises above .67 VDC, there is your culprit. There should be no vacuum applied to the EGR valve at idle. Take a look at the EVR solenoid, it is allowing vacuum through when it should not be applied.
