'89 BII Reverse Lights
You gessed it - I'm new here. Great forum with a lot of helpfull info. I've just purchased an 89 Bronco II XLT 4x4 with 5spd maual transmission and trying to get it ready for a downstate NY inspection. I think I've got most of it covered except for the emissions, which I won't find out till it gets done, and a pesky reverse light problem.
What I've done so far is jummped out the switch connector from the tranny, and the light come on. I figured OK, it must be the switch - went to Autozone and got a new switch. I tested the new switch with an ohm-meter, its good, then pluged it in to the connetor and pressed the "ball bearing" to activate the switch. I had the key on, engine off, the lights came on.
I removed the old switch from the tranny and put the new on in - nothing!
Started it up, and put it in gear still nothing!
Anyone come accross this before?
Thanks
It sounds like you got a dud switch.
The only think I can think of is that the ball bearing on the switch isn't being pressed in by the transmission. There's only two things to test.
Disconnect the switch and jumper the connections. The backup lights should come on with the key on run.
Connect on ohmeter across the switch. With the transmission in reverse there should be almost no resistance across the switch terminals. You'll probably have to remove the switch and stuff short lengths of wire into some pieces of plastic tubing that you can push over the connectors on the switch before reinserting the switch. Then you can attach the ohmeter over these pigtails.
