My son has a 1985 Ford F350 6.9 diesel.... He replaced the fuel pump and was reconnecting the lines.... the metal line with the brass fittings stripped and that line has a wire on it that unplugged from the top of the motor... I have been looking and I can not find that line with that wire on any store site. We do not know what the wire was plugged into the motor for. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
welcome to FTE.
i am wondering if that is a pulse sensor for checking timing of the pump?
i am going to have this moved to the IDI diesel forum where it will be more visible to the people that know these engines.
that is the Fuel Heater.... you don't need it...BUT if you wish you cut the old fitting off that is stripped and just use a Barb in the Lift Pump and a piece of fuel line and a couple clamps.
so to recap. you stripped the brass end? the end that threads into the filter housing? the bottom is steel fitting,. it threads into the LIFT pump, not to confuse it with the fuel pump. the heater wire connects to a wire from the harness that should be found in the middle of the engine front in the same loom as the other temp sender wires. it lays down behind the alternator and goes toward the center of the engine. look there for a wire without a partner . the heater is of modest value and likely is no longer functioning at this late date. but if there are no leaks in the pipe its in, you can reuse.
if the lower fitting is the cross threaded fitting, you may find getting a seal nigh unto impossible. a new pump might be in order.
if its the top brass fitting you might find a 1/4 npt fitting that is ninety degrees a barbed end facing down after threading it into the filter head.
using diesel rated hose you nip off the end of the lift pump metal hose and bridge the distance between the pipe and the brass fitting with a short rubber hose& two clamps
happy motoring
