I don't know if the sealed unit requires service at some point but it would make sense to me to replace it every so often since it could potentially become loaded with oil.

Then it appears you have a non-serviceable unit like the pic I posted above. No filters to get clogged up and replace. It's goofy how some trucks come with the sealed unit.

Check out the inside of these filters when they get some miles on them. I would say if you have a serviceable filter you need to get that thing off the engine and install the sealed unit, or delete it ASAP.
Watched PTT Arod's video this morning - eye opening with the serviceable CCV filter. I had the sealed unit and now running the cheese grader + reroute option = pleased with results. Light scent, little to no visual (ambient air temp dependent) and no drips. Updating the cold side pipe, the upper intake manifold already had a buildup of residue from EGR + CCV oil mist of internal intake pathway at 30k miles.
