it can be done, but it will be A LOT of work.
you will have to swap the complete 97 wiring harness over to the 89, and that will require drilling new holes, filling unused holes, adding mounting points and the computer, and probably a bunch of other things .

If you decide to do this swap make sure you document the procedure please. I have thought about trying to do this swap as well, my plan was to find a wrecked 94.5-97 pickup with a 7.3 and swapping everything over into either my 86 crew cab or my 88 crew cab.
