High Idle
I totally agree. If it's running good, don't mess with it. You can get it running much worse trying to get these speed density systems in spec.
I was still having some occasional issues and started looking into things again. Stumbled on a listing of Lightning specific parts, and the IAC is different from the stock truck, which I never came across in my previous research, at least it never jumped out at me.
So, swapped out the IAC and so far things seem to be perfect. I am going to live with it for a while and report back.
It might take a while, but we will get it right. Eventually. Maybe.
FWIW, my '92 F150 5.8L has had this issue occasionally since I bought the truck new in 1992. Like you, I chased the problem multiple times but have never replaced any related engine parts (aside from routine changing of plugs, cap, filters etc). An adjustment to the throttle stop screw helped a few times but the problem would reoccur later on. The issue was never consistent nor constant. The truck and original engine now has 198,000 miles. Frustration for sure; I just learned to live with it. Twenty-nine years later, this truck remains my best of all time.
My in town mileage is still not great, but I think that is due to the larger throttle body, heavier truck, and higher gearing, versus what the L computer is mapped for. I would like to move to deeper gears... but it seems a lofty goal right now. I do have most of the parts to swap the upper intake to an Edelbrock 3821, and have a better match between the intact tract and computer calibration. Seems like a better design than the 3881, and should produce a better vacuum signal, but also seems like work when it is running well.
