How do I remove the lock cylinder from the steering column, 2003 F150. New lock cylinder says put key in RUN position, stick a "suitable " tool ???? Into access hole, and cylinder should pull right out. I' ve tried a scratch awl, a paper clip, and a coat hanger, nothing. Is this the correct position to have the key in ? What's the suitable tool ? I've done this already on my 97 Lincoln, right in Advance Autos parking lot, and the cylinder pulled right out. Took longer to go buy the part. Any help appreciated. Thank you.
Sometimes the wear and tear creates play so it becomes necessary to adjust the position of the key. I can usually get them out by pressing in on the release while aggressively moving the key forward and back while pulling it out.
For the tool, I prefer to use a nail set. The indented end doesn't do any damage, plus a tap from a hammer can free up a stuck release button.
Good idea to Disconnect your Battery first. Look up through the hole for the button to press. It may be at a slight angle so you may be missing the button when you insert your coat hanger or awl. Insert the tool to find the button and press on it. Then turn the lock cylinder to Run and you should feel the button go in a bit further. Wiggle the lock cylinder and pull assembly out. You can also use an allen key of the appropriate size.

Your advice was right on. That little release button is not in the middle of that access hole. When I shined my flashlight in there, I could see that it was off center. I also used a nail set, worked real nice, almost wrapped right around that release. Took under 5 minutes ! Thank you !!!
