Hello, I have a 08 f150 with 5.4 and about 105,000 miles. I’ve researched this issue and found bits and pieces but not totally what my problem is.
I was driving to work today, got about a mile and truck starts to die for about 15 seconds then does completely. Tried restarting, engine cranked but no start. Then finally it barely started but died. Waited a few minutes and it started and ran long enough to idle and back into a driveway. But would die if I stepped on gas pedal.
went back a few hours later and it started right up and drove home about a mile, seemed to run fine
so, I’ve found it could be the fuel pump control module. I did replace that as a preventative about 4 years ago. Could it of failed again? Maybe I should start with that again?
only other issues I’ve had is when accelerating I’ll get a slight miss once in a while. Truck has 105000 miles and Figured it’s time for a plug and coil change was reason for that.
many ideas would be nice. Thanks
if it is not the module, i would bet on the fuel pump itself...... when you turn the key "ON", but not to "start", the pump should run for 3 seconds to prime the line.... have someone turn the key, and LISTEN at the side of the truck, in front of the rear tire, to see if you hear the pump run

I got home and was going to move truck over by shop. It started I moved 10 feet and it died again. I turned key on and didn’t hear any sound of the fuel pump and it wouldn’t start. So I got the old module off and it looked a little “rough” lol. Got a new one, put it on and it started right up. Test drove and it seemed fine. Time will tell but I’m hoping this was the issue.
I would paint seal the new one . I wonder how much other salt damage is under there . Best find a car wash that sprays underneath several times a winter or more We do that in florida when we get salt floods from storms ,if possible I go to a spray wash and do it myself ,soap it up real good and rinse well . Of course its warm here.

I am very picky to wash this truck when ever possible after driving in salt, as was the previous owner. For a 08 that’s lived in the salt belt all its life it’s very rust free on the underside. The previous replacement module was not doorman, something from Amazon and I don’t think it was quality at all. The new one, doorman, seems better built.
The replacement I got came with standoff's. I also sealed mine with silicon and I painted over it all too. That said, I still get under the truck during oil changes and do a quick inspection of other things as well. It's been about a year and a half since the replacement and I can remember the first time I decided to recheck the FPDM. I was amazed how much stuff still gets stuck in there with the stand-offs. I almost think if it was even further out, there would just be bigger stuff getting stuck in there lol. So just check it every now and then, clear the debris, and since viewing this I think I am going to take it off and maybe repaint it again after this winter. Time to do the underbody again anyways... only last a couple winters up here lol.
