How's it going all? I have a 65 F-250 2WD that originally had a 240 in it. A previous owner, at some point, swapped in an FE, I'm not sure about the size. It also has a four on the floor transmission, if that matters.
Anyway, the truck does not have either power brakes or power steering, and I'm currently working on rectifying that (I know there's plenty of you that say those are unnecessary, but Atlanta traffic). Since I have to swap out pulleys, I'm also going to install a 3G alternator that I picked up at the salvage yard. I'm looking at the pulleys that I need to make the changes, and I read that there is a difference between pre- and post-67 FE engines and the harmonic balancers.
If I use the crankshaft pulley from a 67 or later FE, will I also have to install the harmonic balancer AND timing cover from 67 or later engine? I've included a picture of my current harmonic balancer/crank pulley. I'd appreciate any information or advice. Thanks.
You don't have to change the timing cover.
Make sure your 3G is one with the same hole-to-hole distance as the original so it will bolt on without modifications.

If the balancer is the type with a rubber "sandwich", aka elastomeric bearing, then it should be replaced with a modern unit or rebuilt, as it became roached long ago and isn't absorbing any crank vibrations no mo'.
