1963 223 inline six question

Greetings all....I recently purchased a 63 Ford P3500 parcel delivery "Vanette" and it's been sitting in the weeds for decades. The engine turns over fine with a breaker bar and feels like it has good compression. I pulled the oil plug and very little oil came out. When I looked inside the drain plug hole, there is something sitting about 1/8 of an inch behind the hole. I've never been inside a 223 but have been inside many other engines and have never seen anything so close to the inside of the pan. Is this normal for the 223?

Welcome, 63Vanette!

Oil pickup screen, but it shouldn't be sitting on the bottom.

Thanks Mixer. I thought it was probably the screen too but it seemed like it was in an odd position. I stuck a probe in the drain hole and it's literally right there, but it won't move. I guess I'll have to drop the pan and see. BTW, as I logged back in I realized I was in an earlier year forum so I appreciate the answer.

Welcome to the forum!

Does your oil pan have a large-diameter plate on the bottom with nuts? Most trucks have that, it is a "cleanout plate" that can be dropped to access the oil pickup screen for cleaning. The screen is usually less than 1/2" above the bottom of the pan inside an inverted bell that has the actual pickup tube near the top.

No, it's a solid pan however, it looks easy enough to drop. There's no suspension in the way. The only thing I have to contend with is a crossover exhaust pipe near the back shallow side of the pan. I should be able to clear it..
