77 4x4
came across this site while looking around on google to try and decide what to do with my tired 351
77f150 custom 4x4 short box 351 np435/205
seemed to have it all figured out.
400 crank
tmeyer pistons
for rebuild..........but I cant seem to find a 400 crank.
I see he has a rotating assembly for a stroker but thats little more than I wanted to spend. Plus machine work, cam, springs, head work etc....
My question is for you 351 guys who has rebuilt the 351? Mine seems decent now for power but.i dont know whats been done to it inside except a timing set. This I know cause while removing the pan for rear main seal replacement I found a full handful of nylon timing teeth that had been stripped off the old sprocket. Also severly plugging the oil pickup. And could see the double chain in place.
is has a holly 4 barrel carb and edelbrock streetmaster 400 intake (single plane I believe). longtube headers. Some cheap things came with truck
I drive it every day but not to amd from work. Up to store snd pull my boat (about 4500-5k boat and trailer)
She does #ok# now but I would like little more power/torque.
I have no issue out of the ramp with low first gear, or pulling boat at 70mph on flat ground just takes some time to get her there. A hill or bridge is a different story. I can still get there but shes screaming.
Main reason for rebuild is oil consumption issues.
once I fixed the rear main leaking and the valve covers and oil pan while doing rear main. It used to leal 2.5 quarts oil in 50 miles
not it does not leak oil but burns approx 1.quart on 50 miles. Has excessive crank case pressure( have pcv and it works) but will blow dipstick out of seated position if revs past 2k under load. Smokes under throttle on left bank badly, but from both. And fouls out plugs oil soaked about every 3-4 months.has good compression tho 150 approximately x each hole. So with new plugs shes nice and smooth for a few weeks.
noticed water pump leaking and that is almost the straw that broke the camel back. Then when went to start swapping water pump broke a bolt for alternator off in the head. That was the final straw. It needs it its time these are signs to just do it.
no 400 cranks to be found (yet) still looking
no decent 351 pistons to raise CR
Havent seen any 351 build threads but still looking
all the 351-400 I was reading happen to be years old.
heres a picture of her
Sounds like your engine is just tired. Perhaps bringing it back to original horse power / torque would be an OK situation.
A good article with some history of your engine and ideas:
https://www.moderndriveline.com/the-...-ford-engines/
Around $1700 for a quality rebuilt long block:

Looks like you are at the "Y" in the road....

anyone here personally used a summit reman motor before?
I found a Reman 400 online thru mabbco motors but their reviews are scary and they dont seem to stand behind their product.
id be wiling to spent 3k on freshening it up some

I just rebuilt the 351Measly in my 77 F250, TOTALLY different truck now!
It had already been poked .030 and the cylinders still had the crosshatch, only reason I pulled it is the cam dropped a lobe, it was really a dog beforehand, low end was ok, but it couldn't pull a long hill empty.
I went with new intake bolts, head bolts, harmonic balancer, lots of little things like new oil pan bolts, air cleaner and such, but the main parts were the costliest, I think about $2k for everything and I couldn't be happier!
Summit 500cfm 4bbl carb
Weiand 8010 intake
Melling high volume oil pump
Comp Cams K-13-219-3 new pushrods, lifters and springs
Cloyes timing set
Summit HEI dist
Luk clutch assy
Finally got the intake on and sealed (I screwed up the first time and smudged the china wall silicone and it leaked, bad) my initial timing right now is at 18* BTDC I may bump it up a tad more once I start driving him and play around with it, but it really woke the 351Measly up, with about 1200# worth of 300 inline 6 and trans and misc crap in the bed, on my test drive yesterday evening, I pulled a grade accelerating to 80 before I let off.
I didn't want to drop a lot of $ into him because he's just a wood cutting, hunting, wheeling fun truck, maybe gets a thousand or so miles a year, maybe..
Pictures of my 77's, Sid the tan one is the pretty boy I call him, he doesn't get worked anymore, just fun driving.
Yep, I got stuck passing gf in her jeep when she was stuck
friend w/40's didn't think my old "pile of iron" would make it with only 33's, I showed him I could!

My tan one, Sid, he has same drivetrain but has 3.50's and he had more power than my F250, not much, 33's and 3.50's and smog crap not a good combo, I plan on going to 4.10's someday..
Wish I had more pics, I have to take a look and see if I have any, I'm not big on documenting things.. the mounting plate is from 4 wheel parts IIRC, I basically took some 2x4 angle iron I had and bolted it to the frame then welded the top plate steel to it and drilled the holes for the winch plate. My plan was, and is to finish it out to the sides at an angle, then add some 4" plate to cover the front. When I initially did it years ago, I was in a hurry to get the winch on before I went up hunting for 5 days and was going to finish it when I got back... well, y'all know how life goes, some things don't quite get finished. It works well, I have used it enough for myself and others that the wire rope broke so I went to synthetic, I think I have actually worn the milemarker out, last time I used it the internal brake wouldn't hold.
As to the cooling, I just redid the top end on the 351 after it dropped a lobe, before that, it would warm up a tad on driving up hills, but when wheeling was never a problem, it's stock radiator.
When pulling everything to get the engine out, I removed the AC condenser, so once summer rolls around this year I'll see how he does without that in front of the radiator.
More pics, cause we all like truck ****
