Was pulling cpu for chip upgrade and the 10 mm bolt holding plug to cpu was already loose, when i pulled cpu there is is a bolt stem screwed into cpu, i am assuming the bolt from ingine bay screws into cpu so looks like it twisted off, how do i get bolt out of grey plastic plug in engine? Tried pliers on cpu side but threads too deep in, assuming it will have to be drilled out or?
If it is in plastic..... Use a left hand drill bit..... As the part heats up and the counter clockwise rotation could very well loosen up and unscrew while drilling.
Since the bolt is designed to stay in the plug I assume there is a c clip inside the plug around the shaft of the bolt. Will probably have to pull the cover off the back of the plug to get to it. Does yours look like this??
Found this description on how the bolt is retained in the connector on another forum.
The bolt has a flat washer with pie shaped spring fingers and the center hole is smaller than the bolt.
I suspect, the best course of action is for you to remove the wheel liner in order to have more space to work. Very carefully remove the cover to the connector on the engine side and then reinstall a new bolt of the proper length and thread pitch.
Looks like the black cover snaps on to the grey sleeve, seperating it will be the chore, did a feable attempt to drill into broken piece but bit would not biteinto metal, was not sure what i was doing so gave up early, bolt in engine bay was problem that eluded me
I am not in your shoes, but if I were I would be very gentle with the plastic cover.
I would also do my best to fix the issue because you do not want the connector coming loose going down the road. The truck will stall instantly and you could destroy the PCM.
Worst case scenario is you need to get a new harness, but I am optimistic that you will resolve the issue and breath a sigh of relief soon.

‘The PCM side of it you could give Jonathan at Diesel Technology of Chattanooga a call, he may be get it out or have professional advice. If you end up sending it into Jonathan you could also have him go through the PCM and make sure everything’s in good condition.
The engine harness side of the problem:
There’s a lot of threads regarding your issue...a significant number of people stated they just pushed the harness into the pcm and it’s been that way without issue. I’m not sure how I feel about that idea but it’s good to know you have that option.
I found the following on an F150 forum:
If you have not gotten the bolt out of the wiring harness yet, take the black plastic backing off the harness and there is a CLIP holding the bolt in I just used a pair of needle nose pliers and got ahold of that clip and bent it back and forth to break it. (its not easy) worse case you may have to retap the hole in the cpu.. Dont go to much larger because the metal in that hole is not very thick at all and you will drill through it and then your screwed. Just take your time and be careful
I am not sure if you have a climate controlled space to work in or not, but I would suggest not trying to get the black cap off the PCM connector when it is cold. Maybe use a hair dryer or something to bring the temperature up a bit. The plastic may be brittle and if it is cold, that will only enhance the brittleness.
Bolt is attached to black shell and other end into PCM, hoping to get black cover off in 1 piece to install new bolt.
Ok maybe I'm slow but I do not understand the situation. Pics would help.
Here's what I think is going on, please let me know where I get it wrong.
The bolt that holds the connector to the PCM is broken. The top part of it is spinning freely but trapped in the connector by the retention circlip. The bottom broken off part is stuck in the PCM. So the connector can be pulled free from the PCM and the PCM can be removed from the truck. That broken bit in the PCM is carefully removed once you crack open the PCM on the bench. If that's the deal hopefully you can disconnect that chunk of harness to the PCM. Then working on that harness on the bench you can remove the broken bolt.
Sous has a great idea about warming up the black plastic top before trying to remove it. That plastic is old and needs all the love you can give it to prevent breaking.
