Trans fluid temp sensor issue?

So, I’m driving along and all of a sudden the “CHECK GAGE” light comes on and TOW HAUL starts flashing. And my trans temp needle is at min and is reading -68.4 degrees on my Dashdaq.

trans fluid was just changed and is at the correct level. Transmission is acting normally.

And it’s all back. Transmission has been acting normal the whole time. This time engine light also came on.

Codes are
p0700 (trans control system MIL Request)
p0710 trans fluid temp sensor circuit A
p0713 trans fluid temp sensor circuit A High

Either a bad trans temp sensor or a bad harness inside the transmission.

According to my SnapOn software, all of those codes are usually fixed by replacing the sensor. The second most common fix is replacing the transmission filter, which you might choose to do at the same time. Not hard, just have to drop the pan, pull the pan filter, locate the sensor, unplug the wire, then press a tab and turn counterclockwise to pull out.

Thanks, I was hoping you’d see this! I’m picking up a temp sensor tomorrow, hopefully that’s it!

Is it ok to drive it at all or no?

Changing the filter isn't going to fix a bad sensor or wiring.

A faulty temp sensor is common to cause what you described. Just make sure the replacement is a Motorcraft part so you don't have to do it again in a month.

Yeah, that software does that. Subscribers enter the repairs done, and shops throw filters into jobs like this a lot, so it comes up a lot in the results. Effectively, based on that software's unscientific data, it's almost always the sensor, but I hated to tell him/her just one possible cause. Glad you came around.

To the OP, Mark K saved me with a problem that turned out to be that internal transmission harness as well, just as he told me. I wrote up the process for newbies in a thread here. It's not hard, but it has to be done right. Requires that you drop the solenoid body, then replace it without messing up the seal where the connector goes through the case. There's a bolt on the outside holding that connector together. It was broke on mine, and heck to get off, creating the bad connection requiring replacement. I've not had a problem with the bolt again or on any other truck. But be aware. It doesn't come out of the connector. It just unscrews all the way and stays on the connect. Rock the connector only slightly up/down and it will disconnect if the bolt is all the way out.

Unfortunately Motorcraft isn’t an option until later in the week, and I need the truck tomorrow. I’ll be opening it all back up again in 20k miles anyway so I’ll put Motorcraft in then...if this one lasts that long 🤞

Thanks, much appreciated!

What out when you pull the sensor - there's oil behind it and it goes all the way up your arm if it has a chance - ask me how I know.

I have one in my spare parts kit, but if Motorcraft is the best to get, it might not hurt for people to have one in their spare parts pile since there are many parts for the 6.0 starting to go discontinued and these are inexpensive.
