My 92 has just ticked past 318k, original steering box. 3" drop pittman arm, 02 F250 D50 monotube axle, pmf 2.25" rsk, factory X code super duty springs. When the axle went in ~ 35k ago it got new balljoints, and ive since replaced both unit bearings. Everything is tight, toe is dead on, tires wear great, my pickup pull right like youre driving through a 60-70mph crosswind. It just kinda started doing this out of the blue one day. Checked front end, checked tire pressure, even rotated tires, still there. The entire power steering system needs gone through, but its not a priority right now if i can help it. Fluid is horrible looking, picture fluid from a slipping transmission that hit 280*, which is impressive given the fact that i have to add a qt every few thousand miles. Pump was replaced with a JY one a couple years ago. The lines are where the fluid leaves. Always have used merc / dex III. Ive adjusted the box once or twice after i got it, helped initially but the play comes back, 20-25* degrees worth.
Can it be some valving or some such inside the steering box that has went fubar causing it to pull?
You could try flushing the system and installing a filter on the return line.
Are you running the Saginaw pump or the Ford one?
Your pump could be getting hot, ruining the fluid, and putting deposits in the gearbox
Its the ford one, what i need to do is just replace the system, but i have other priorities for the checking account right at the moment, thus the JY pump. Just a little slower getting to it than i bargained on. It will have a nice new pump and redhead box before too much longer, just trying to limp it through winter.
