...Octane

...Over the past few years, I heard mention of the fact the octane ratios have decreased...Which apparently have negative effects on the older riggs, I know that I need to run Plus/Premium in my 79...reg unleaded just dont cut it anymore...
So I got curious...Does anyone remember some of the octane ratios from the late 70's/early 80's??
...Not looking for tech data...just a little trivia

I know that lead in gas helped with the octane ratings.

Texaco called their gasoline's: Firechief 88, Skychief 98

B/A also had : Regular 88 ......Super 98

That must have meant something.

I know for a fact that premium was over a 100 Octane.
(102 I think)

I say we all convert our vehicles to run off JP-5. Our portable fire pumps aboard ship can run it, so it souldn't be that tough of a conversion. 0-60 in 2.3 seconds

How about the old "STINKER STATIONS"?

-Shoot, I still remember the old Texaco commercials with Bob Hope...

But back then, 98 octane was only 25 cents a gallon.

In San Diego the best I have seen at a gas pump was 92 - and it costs for it too! All of those nickels and dimes add up fast.

This is why I advocate diesel so much, especially with Biodiesel as an alternative. Even if you can't run pure biodiesel, you can cut your fuel 25% with green fuel if you learn how to make it and have a place to do it.

Most fast food places have to pay to get rid of old oil, and that stuff is fuel waiting to be burned.

How would you like fifty five gallons of free gas, even if it had to be run through four or five tanks to use it all?

- That's what I've been looking at for the last several months now...

A dollar is a dollar

Does this mean that I should be running higher than 87 octane in my '86? I've always used 87. Never even tried the higher stuff in the truck.

...Oh yea....I remember now....Id forgotten about those texaco commercials..!!!
...Was lead added for octane or was it added as a top end lube...??
...I've always wanted a diesel...well actually a "mulitifuel" diesel like the army used in their duece 1/2...but thats a throw-back to my survivalist days from the early 80's...The fact is Im just now getting comfortable with my carbuerator mechanic skills.

...I dont know how it would affect your late 80's rig, but I can sure tell the difference when my kid borrows my '79 and puts cheap gas in it...(he didn't think I'd notice) 'Specially, with enviro friendly crap they have down here in Phoenix...

Was lead added for octane or was it added as a top end lube...??
It lubed the valve seats. The exhaust valve seats would get hot and "weld" itself to the vavle. The lead prevented this. The higher octane rating was an added benifit. Too bad it causes cancer. Now I have to run a can of substitute each time I change my oil.
