Exploring my new truck. Freeze plug patch?

Exploring my new first truck. Was crawling under it to check stuff out and saw this.

Looks like someone clamped a washer and gasket there?

Is that normal?
First glance looks like a crack leaking hell gunk but wiped it and it seems like maybe it’s just spraying out of that thing and accumulating over time. Will scrub and clean when the rain stops.

That is not a factory freeze plug but is an acceptable plug to an existing motor where you can not reach the plug to an installed engine. Clean it up check for leaks replace it if you ever pull the engine.

Those have been around forever. I had one in my engine back in 1972.

I keep one in the truck for emergencys. I have lost a freeze plug on the road and those rubber plugs will get you home. I would replace it at the earliest opportunity though.

It's an expandable freeze and they have been around for as long as I have been wrenching on my personal vehicles. Used one on my 67 Mustang years back and it held fine for as long as I owned it.

I doubt the rubber will rot any faster than the metal will deteriorate. And if it does, a wrench and a few minutes work has a new one in.

It does look like a handy part to keep in the glovebox.

The 360 engine that came out of my 72 4x4 had three of them in it. Seems it could come in very handy at some point. I had one start losing water on me in high school. I drove a 69 f250 2wd with a 428 out of a station wagon or T-bird that my dad got from a JY. Wish I still had it.

It is definitely a good part to keep in a recovery bag along with other things for those times you might break down.

Expandable rubber freeze plugs have been around for a long time and can be a time and money saver when you can't install a new steel or brass plug back with the engine in the vehicle.

As for it leaking and coolant spraying out, that line with coolant below but not above doesn't usually happen like that, I'm afraid when you get it cleaned off your going to find a cracked block.
They do made block sealers you can use to stop the leak

I know, I'm working pretty hard on my denial concerning the state of this engine. Everything I'm finding is pretty bad. Oil in the coolant (no coolant in oil though), what looks like metallic spatter on plug 8 (which is right next to that crack I'm trying to deny) and super terrible compression. I was figuring on a rebuild when I got the truck but a cracked block seems like the kind of thing that would make that make less sense right?

Sounds like your in for a tear down and possible rebuild anyway, finding a useable replacement block isn't to hard.
