1986 Steering Column compatability

My 1986 F-150 XLT Lariat is in the shop for a few minor issues. One thing that went wrong is the ignition. I thought that it was the actuator not making contact because I could start the truck after turning the key with a pair of pliers and pushing the actuator toward the firewall where it made the appropriate contact. The mechanic told me that some piece on the column was weak and broke and that there are no longer replacements made for it. (I do not recall the name of the piece but it was not the actuator). Anyway, he said that it was best to get a new steering column and that he was looking for one but he did not know all the compatible years with a 1986 F-150 Lariat with tilt wheel and cruise control. Thus my question to you all.
What years would be compatible with the 1986 F-150 Lariat so that boneyards could be checked for a replacement column? I know that in 1987 Ford remodeled the exterior of the truck as well as the interior but do not know if that meant they changed the steering column.

I don't believe your mechanic. I think he doesn't want to replace the actuator, it's a little bit of a pain. From what you are describing, it is the broken actuator. It's a very common problem, your truck is not special and has some sort of special one of a kind problem. You may need a new mechanic.
