Long story. Restoring my late fathers 1976 f250 4x4 highboy. Years ago he replaced the OEM engine (400?) with another 400. Kept original trans but with a married transfer case. Eventually parked the truck in the field where it sat for 20+ years. Two years ago I pulled it out of the mud, stripped the mechanical and electrical, & sent the body to the shop for restore. Had another 351/400 M rebuilt with another C6 trans. Installing the original divorced NP203 chain transfer case. Rebuilt.
I get the truck back, bolt the transmission to the engine, slide both into place and wtf?? rear transmission mount is 3 inches forward of the crossmember. I swap the motor mounts side to side, which brings the engine back, but it's still almost 2 inches forward of the crossmember.
Any idea of what's going on with this? Engine is an engine and there shouldn't be an issue with the motor mounts. Transmission is a C6, but as there's like 3 versions of the C6 I'm wondering if the tail member is wrong and too short.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Probably because your pickup came with an FE and it wouldn't have had a 335 series engine in the first place. so once you start modifying things these things happen. you may have to find some early '77 parts since those were a divorced 335 set up. and yes your tail housing is probably the problem and that likely will require a different tail shaft .
It's too bad, you're having to work at putting Fords worst V8 in where one of the best belongs . but you're committed now.
Well, I do appreciate your input. I'm looking into the tail shaft now.
As for worst & best. That's a matter of opinion. My 78 has a 460 block turned into a stroker with carb. Nice engine, lots of power, but a beast on fuel.
the 76 will get the 351/400M with upgrades and fuel injection, updated electrical system, converted power steering, and belt conversion.
I expect it will be a decent vehicle overall for my kids to drive.
I'm not saying your 335 won't work but it will never be the engine the FE is that's not really an opinion but a fact.
The 460 is a 385 series and a great engine. but your '76 would have come with a 360 . so a 390 or 428 would normally be the standard upgrade. not that it matters now , as far as your parts go whatever an early '77 used is what you need so it shouldn't be too hard to get.
That is the right tail for a highboy C6. Looking at the pic I guess I’m not seeing the issue. It looks like the trans is bolted to the mount and the mount is on the crossmember?
no. Checked that. the mount on the transmission is set so that the plate sits as far back as possible. crossmember is sitting right. Motor mounts can go two different ways. one way sits the engine about an inch forward, but they're installed to move the engine back.
For some reason I missed the 76 part so yea that’s the problem. The towers I don’t think are the same for FE and 335. You’re probably going to have to drill 2 more holes in the frame to relocate the crossmember.
Im really not sure. I'd have thought the towers were the same. was hoping someone here would know, or could point me in the right direction to find out.
