Driveshafts I'm not too worried about as Im getting new built according to final measurements. it would be nice to get the engine and trans sitting where they should be though.
I know conversion kits to 460 engines are available. but can't find anything for 351M
Maybe. I'm happy with where it's sitting, but will do some more research before re-positioning the rear support. I've plenty of time to mull it over and other things to work out. Electrical system, injection system,
how to get a power steering gear box in. lol..
I did not do any electrical other than pertronix for ignition. I did do 78/79 power steering and crossover when I swapped to a hp D60 front axle. Also did fuel injection on the 445 I built.
That was all in the last 10 years. I kinda forget some of the things I did to be honest. I do need to address the headlight wiring as it trips the breaker when high beams are on for a while.
I'm doing the complete electrical upgrade. Headlights to tail lights. Dash is a pain though. Have to terminate most everything. hopefully headlight shouldn't be an issue as the system is designed with higher amperage and voltage reulator. going to Leds will help.
power steering though is screwing me up. Front crossmember doesn't make it easy to mount a gear box to the inside of the frame rail on drivers side. Options are to modify radiator support to fit the gear box in there as with the 78/79. or get a box that mounts on the outside of the frame rail. or go to different gear box all together.
Still haven't figure that out.
I notched and boxed the crossmember and frame to accept the 78/79 3/4 ton 4wd box. There is no cutting of the radiator support. I’ve done 2 highboys like this and both work good.
originally a C6. Original engine was the 360 as sixpack mentioned. Im installing the 351/400M
but I believe the motor mounts (pedestals) are the same.
I couldn't tell you for sure what the differences are, but I just looked up the part numbers for the engine perches and they are definitely different between the FE and the 335.
The part numbers for the 77 (pre-serial Y20,001 a.k.a highboy) are D7TZ-6028-A for right side and D7TZ-6029-A for left. The later 77's and 78's used a different number yet, but it looks like just a revision change so they may work too- D7TZ-6028-D (right) and D7TZ-6029-D (left). 79's used the same number for the right, but D8TZ-6029-A for the left.
I'm going to bet these will be wrecking yard only. I did a quick and dirty search and didn't find anything NOS, but there are a couple of other NOS parts wizards on the forums here that might chime in with a more definitive answer.
