It's a pain. There is an exhaust port on the back of each head. That metal pipe is a y, going to each port with a single bolt holding it on. You can take that manifold y off, but then you need to plug the ports. People find metal plugs that fit the ports, but they usually install them with the heads off. What I usually do is cut the manifold, weld the hole shut, and then bolt the piece back on to block it off. If you ever have the heads off or the engine out, you can do a better job blocking the ports. Those ports are the reason you have to be careful and put the heads back on the left or right bank. Otherwise the port will end up at the front of the engine. Of course it doesn't matter if you block the ports off.
