Runaway 7.3!

I've just seen this on Facebook, it's the first time I've heard of a 7.3 doing this. I've seen it happen on other motors though.
Yes the truck is a 7.3, it just has a later tailgate.

Hmm, it went to the group's page, not the post abut the runaway. It's a private group so I don't think the rest of us can see it unless we are members of the group. Can you post a screencap please?

Scary site... Hopefully they were able to cut off the air flow and save it, but the pictures don't look good.

I can only imagine it happening. I'm a wuss and I'd find me a concrete barrier of some sort to hide behind.

It wasn't clear whether they managed to get it shut down, usual Facebook comments about how stupid people are (I'm being polite here). It was one of those scenarios that went through my mind when I was burning oil, which turned out to be turbo seals, my truck would smoke pretty bad under certain no load conditions (not quite as bad as in the pic, but enough to be concerned...) but would also clear completely under load. At no time did it feel like it would runaway.
I've never seen a post on here about this happening to a member....

Hard to imagine how enough oil would make it all the way through the charge air system and into the intake to cause that to happen

It would occasionally happen on the old Mercedes diesels. Some guys would keep an old phone book handy to shove into the intake just in case. By I have never heard of it happening on a 7.3 either

No, the usual Facebook stuff from people who have no idea & no further comments from the OP.......
I know that some diesel engines will just scream until they let go, once they're running on their own oil, the only thing that will stop them is cutting off the air supply or running out of oil.
An old friend used to drive cement trucks, they had a 2 stroke diesel donkey engine, he told me that occasionally they would "kick back" when starting them & run in reverse rotation, this meant that the governor no longer controlled the rpm. If you were quick, you could hit the fuel line with a BFH & they would stop, if not then just get as far away as possible before the rods came out.......

Any diesel engine is capable of it. Inherent design flaw compared to a gasoline engine which won’t run on oil.

In post #3 it states the owner had just changed the oil. I would bet the oil was overfilled.

I have heard the stock PCV can suck oil out if there is too much vacuum in front of the turbo (clogged filter). Theoretically the oil seal on the cold side of the turbo can fail and start allowing oil into the charge air circuit. Mine was leaking pretty good when I pulled it out to rebuild it but I have a hard time imagining it could be enough to make the motor run away (who knows). That is one of the reasons I have the PCV vented to a dump tube.

It's a shame that the guys on the video want it to blow up.
Some have said, to stop the runaway, shoot an ABC fire extinguisher in the air intake to clog the air filter.
