I have a 95 F-150 2WD with the 5.0L & E4OD. I had an 89 which had more grunt than this one. I use it for towing and barely manages a 20' ski boat where the 89 could take on both the ski boat and an cabover camper. I hear from non-CA owners of the 5.0L package that 18-19mpg is realistic on the freeway. I have tried everything external to the engine except a chip and only get 15mpg (and anemic torque below 2000rpm). K&N, 3" CAT back, JB shorty hdrs, MSD-6A. What has Ford done different for the CA engines? What can be done to get higher mileage and/or a little more power below 2500rpm?
Im sure the added emissions equipment impair the engine . If you are doing a lot of towing , hauling then rear end gear changes is probably the best way to go . Your 89 may have had lower gearing ?
The 89 started out with 3.50 gears on stock P235-75R15 tires. Then the gears changed to 4.10 AFTER the tires changes to 10.00X31. So, for a while the 1" larger diameter tires were on the 3.50 gears. The 95 has 3.50 gears with P275-60R17, about 1" larger dia than the stk P235. So, all things near equal, the 95 302 is really choked.
Does CALIF need more, or more restrictive emissions specs, than Oregon? The 18mpg of non-Calif 302's is with the same (95-96) model years. What can be done that has a CARB EO# or pass the sniffer tests?
Thanks.
How many convertor's does it have? I know that California' trucks have really restrictive exhuasts, which most likely gives you the problem, Also, you should have the Mass Air efi system, which I believe doesn't get the mileage of a speed density system.,
BTW, my 93 get's about 18 now, I got 23 during the summer of 1999.
