just acquired a 1997 NYC FD ambulance. F350 156k miles on 7.3. there is a block heater switch in the electronics compartment but I see no way to feed 120vt to it. anyone have any knowledge of ambulance setups ?
I don't have a clue on how an ambulance is set up. But on the pickup trucks, the block heater is located in the rear housing on the oil cooler, above the oil filter, with the cord running to the front of the truck. Start at the heater and trace the wiring back to see where it leads.
If you don’t care about keeping the current block heater setup, you should be able to buy the standard cord online and swap it out with what you have plugged into the current housing for the oil cooler and just plug it up. I may be wrong though. I don’t have a lot of experience with the ambulance platform. But if you can get up
under it to take a picture of the oil cooler mount, we may be able to see more of what’s going on.
It may not be hooked up. Most of those trucks were originally designed to either be running all the time or stored inside a heated bay so the block heater would not be necessary. The other option is that it is wired into an auto-eject plug, which is usually on the side of either the fender or the box itself. If it is on the box, it will usually be on the drivers side close to the front of the box.
I also see an air compressor. Looks like has an air ride suspension. If it is intact, that is a nice feature.
Does it have the factory engine control box?
it may not have many miles, but it probably has a pile of engine hours. Being a fleet ambulance it should have been maintained pretty well while it was in service.
