I have a 2020 7.3 gas engine short bed truck with a 34 gallon tank.
I called Titan and they told me they cannot make an extra large GAS tank. Due to the EPA and the vapor recovery system. They cannot alter it in anyway. End of story. The diesel tanks have a different fill neck size.
So, has anyone installed a 48 gallon OME GAS tank in a short bed? I looked under the truck and there is a ton of room forward of the 34 gallon tank.
I am pretty sure the fill neck are the same size and the vapor stuff would be the same. Hopefully the computer would not though code for check engine light.
thoughts? It would be nice to pick up a wrecking yard tank and swap it in.
This has been discussed before, they are different and won't work.
In my opinion Ford was very short sided not building a larger tank for the gas motor trucks. They leveraged what they had and called it good enough, bean counters making decision and not truck people.
I search the forum for 10 minutes before posting my question. I found no discussions on this in regards to 2017-20 GASOLINE trucks. Please direct me to those discussions.
Titan did direct me to a gasoline tank that sits on the bed side. It was more for filling ATV and motorcycles. I did not want to stop and fill over the side of my truck to extend my driving range.
The vapor recovery system may not be compatible. I had heard that the gasoline fuel system computer checks for air tightness. That’s why if you leave your fuel cap off the check engine lights comes on. I think it draws a vacuum to make sure it’s tight.
But, maybe an auxiliary tank separated by a solenoid valve with a pump would work. The solenoid would keep the main tank air tight.
Here is a relevant thread from the 6.2 forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-2-trucks.html. Transfer Flow has come out with a larger gas tank for the current gen F150, so I'm hoping the end up making one for the super duty line up. However, I emailed them a couple months ago and the rep that responded says there is nothing in the works. Pretty short sighted considering the fact that there are now two gas engines being offered. That makes for a lot of short bed truck owners that would love to fork down $2k for an extra 20+ gal of fuel.
The OEM 48 gallon tank does not fit in a short bed truck. (Gas or diesel)
they are simply too long. On a long bed they use all the available room behind the cab, and extend a long way underneath the cab. I have owned both a 2017 gas F350, and a 2019 diesel F350. Both long beds. There is no way that tank is going under a short bed truck.
There is nothing wrong with asking.
it's the best way to get information.
That is what these forums are for, information exchange.
Unfortunately there does not to seem to be a good solution to this issue.
When I have time for the project I plan to throw caution to the wind and order the transferflow diesel tank and just make it work on my gasser.
my theory is the evap system should be mostly fine, and the rest... we will see... generally engineering is well beyond a 2x variation in volume because of potential differences in heat etc....
Please report back on this. I have been trying to locate photos and dimensions of the Ford 48 gallon tank. I still think its doable. It would also be about half the price of a Transfer Flow, S&B, or Titan.
