Backfiring......

My 73 F-100 2WD with a 302 has a problem. If it's in park and I accelerate and then let off the gas real quick it back fires like mad........ multiple times depending on how far the gas is pushed. If im driving and I accelerate it does the same but not quite as bad. I took it out one day and on a clear long straight section of road opened it up. Once I got up to about 80 I let of the gas real quick and proceeded to jump about 2 feet in the air. My right drivers side exhaust isn't connected (can't get one nut off) and with the hole in the floor I can hear outside. Well the EXPLOSION that happened scared the living daylights out of me. It was literaly a HUGE bang. Nothing more.... just that one. It has begun to worry me and I would like to fix it. Im planning on putting about $200 into this truck (not including the remain $180 to pay for it) in the next couple of months and want to solve this. thanks a bunch -myers

What you are hearing is some left over fuel after combustion mixing with the cold air being sucked back into the exhaust manifold when it is deccelerating. If you keep doing this, you are likely to burn an exhaust valve.
Ever watch Nascar at night and see the flames coming out of the pipes when they slow down to go itno a corner? Same thing..
A good muffler shop should be able to torch out the broken stud and install new ones.
