I have a 01' Expy 4.6L with a diagnostic code P0402 (ERG Flow Excessive Detected). I applied vacuum to the ERG valve (8"Hg), with the vehicle at idle & it began running rough/slugish. I pulled the red line off the solenoid and found 20"Hg of vacuum there. The green line between the solenoid & valve seems clear. Are these correct readings/results? I have pulled the EGR valve off and cleaned the orfices on the valve and on the throttle body. I have also reset the comlputer a couple of times with no help. It seems like a couple of these parts have two names, what is the DPFE & where is it located? If anyone has any troubleshooting tips- please help. I've had this Ford for about 2 yrs & I think the check light has been on for at least a year or longer. By the way, this is my first Ford product. Thank you, atlcatdaddy.
The DPFE is located on top of the engine. Look at the tube that runs from the manifold to the EGR valve. It has 2 small hoses coming off of it, follow them and they will lead you right to it.
From what I have read, These are know to go bad and will tell you that something is wrong when it isn't.

PO402 = excessive EGR flow. This is not a carbon build-up in the elbow or throttle body. (That would cause low flow.) It could be the EGR itself "stuck" open but you say you cleaned that and it did not solve you problem.
In an '01 4.6L I can ALMOST guaranty it is the DPFE. If you can find your EGR look for an aluminum "box" down and to the left. (Could be black plastic if it's been replaced before.) There are two small black hoses attached to it.
Replace this first! It is easy and you should be able to get the part for less then $50.00.
If your PO402 comes back (very rare). Do a search on EGR Vacuum Regulator. Commonly referred to as EVR.
Good luck,
Bill

So the DPFE is the solenoid, right? I ordered one today it should get here in one or two days. Sometimes it seems there are several names for the same part. Hopefully it will fix the problem- I will report back once I've installed and tested it. Thanks all.
