Hi all, I have a 2020 f450 4x4 7.3 crew cab 179 wheel base with an aluminum skirted flatbed and my mpg empty average is about 10.5. I was wondering if that’s what everyone else is coming up with. I have 4.88 gears and the average speed is about 60-65.
What is the weight of your F450? Do you have a pic to post? How many miles do you have on the truck? Based on all the mpg info with 6.2's, 6.7's and now 7.3's that I have read over the years your truck seems right in there for average.

the truck has 10,xxx miles on it as of this week. I don’t know the weight, I haven’t scaled it. My old 2004 v10 f550 4x4 was getting 10 empty so I was hoping to beat it with new technology but that’s okay I guess. It’s for work not play haha

That's excellent mileage! When I had my 2020 F550 it was 5-6.5mpg the whole time. Truck was 18k curb weight the whole time.
You ‘had’ a 2020 F550? Where did it go so soon I’m just curious? 18k curb weight so it must have been a mechanic truck I’d guess?
It's was a company truck and hopefully in a auction yard somewhere, I put 100k on that truck in 14 months. Yes it was a service truck with a large dominator body and crane. Fully stock with parts and 1200 gallons in spare fluids. Just a miserable 100k and I won't miss it, truck was mostly dependable. I will say by 100k the engine was not as perky and probably nearing its service limit.
I'm guessing your weight is 9500 lbs +/- and at 60 mph I feel up to 12 mpg would be a reasonable expectation. I recall several 6.2's that showed less than expected mpg with the large flatbed on them. I think the width hurts as much as the added weight.

Thats some miles wow. Why was it miserable? Compared to driving what else? It does seem there is a consensus of people grossing that weight constantly that after 100k the engine is iffy. Not the best news for me I guess because I pull about 10k every mile the truck drives.

Yeah they’re as aerodynamic as a brick but it is what it is. Even with more technology there’s just a cap on fuel economy with a gasser.

Well overall comfort, 100k in a base XL with that much weight is not the best. The truck was painfully slow, not as slow as the 6.8 it replaced. Now I am in a 21 F650 with a 7.3 and a six speed. Just as slow but the platform is more stable. I also have air ride seating which helps tremendously. The mileage is worse in case anyone wonders, its somewhere in the high 4's low 5's, CAT scale has it at 23k. Just got back from a 6 day 3100 mile trip.
I used just over 600 gallons of fuel and had plenty of foot to the floor action on this trip and towed back a small trailer with a 72" Vee bucket. My biggest issue is the lack of engine braking with the 6 speed, it did not feel like the 10 speed. The truck would upshot on grades at 3600rpm and it was hard to keep safe speed.

The ride comfort is definitely not ideal on these trucks. For 2021 Ford just came out with a F600 which is only available in a single cab but it’s still the pickup truck look and not a medium duty truck. I wonder what it is like. I can say I hated the 6.2 and would take my 6.8 over it. But I love the 10 speed. Engine braking still isn’t super great but it tries. The 7.3 is slow though
If you were planning from the ground up for best highway mileage, you cold make a few different choices, but then again, it would be a compromise, and you might not be happy with it. Fuel is cheap, burn lots, lol.
Yeah its just an inbetween towns truck with a bunch of city driving thrown in so real world average is about 7.5 but I couldnt justify going with the diesel just because of the issues caused by driving mostly in town.
