Hello everyone, I have a new to me 2001 f250 with an auto trans and 212k on the dash. Now I want to start this off with I am new to diesel engines but I am very sure that this is way louder than it should be (and was told by others who have had a same year f350 that it was not normal). The howl only shows up between 30 to 40 mph then will go away until 60 to 70, and if I let off the go pedal it goes away all together. The howl was there before i did s&b intake, 4" exhaust from turbo back, sinister diesel up pipes, mishimoto radiator and trans cooler and degas bottle, and 33" tires...and its still there. it sounds to me like its coming from the driverside. Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.
Can you be a little more specific about this howl? Any vibrations that go along with it? Since it's speed related I'd be checking steering, all the u-joints, and those damn needle bearings for the stub shafts in the front end.
Like udsuth78 said, please be more specific about the howl. An audio recording will help immensely. In the absence of that, your description of symptoms leads me to guess your turbo has failed bearings. Do you have a boost gauge? What is boost doing while this howl is coming and going? Driveline howl does not typically go away at higher speed.

There doesn't seem to be any vibrations. And I'm not sure I can describe it any better than it's like a resonating howl that sounds like its between the middle of the steering wheel and shin level in the engine compartment.

I will try to get an audio but I doubt it will show up, I have an edge CS evo. monitor through the obd2 port, I will monitor more closely tonight, on a side note i don't think i have ever seen the boost go past 11psi, but i will check tonight.

Welcome to FTE Forum.
You are covering a lot of real-estate for what you are calling a howl. Some may call this a purr...., a scream.... or a turn the radio up.... or normal.
Is this a 'Driving Howl.. or an engine howl'...? Have someone in the drivers seat and rev up the engine, while you are standing with hood up and try to narrow down the howl. Keep hand and body away from running motor.
FordTruckNoob gave a very good suggestion to check the turbo fan. Check this with the truck OFF , and hand move the turbo fan in/out, up/down.
This could also be the serpentine belt squealing/howling. Check the pulley being locking up (truck off) (No, I do not think that you do not know what to look for and how to do it, but I do not know you and I go with the motto of 'Safety first and always). When looking at the serpentine belt and pulley, grab the water pump fan and wiggle it around (truck off) and see if there is any movement. If all of this looks ok, start truck and see if the serpentine belt is running 'true' and not over to one side or the other.
Start there and get back to us and let us know what you have found.

Turbo is tight and the pulleys have no play. I have not got any one to rev engine for me yet. And the howl is kinda like big tires on the freeway type of howl but coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment between the top of the pedals and the middle of the steering wheel, it only shows up from 30 thru 40mph and then stops until it shows up again at 60 thru 75, but it will stop anytime I let off the accelerator. And I appreciate your time and attention to safety.
30-40 is the neighborhood of torque converter lock up, any chance it could be related? I'm not all that experienced with transmissions so maybe someone else might know, but thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.
Put your phone in a holder and record a video while driving so we can hear the howl. Position the phone so it is recording the speedo as you are doing this. Since you mentioned tire howl, what tires are you running? Trying to tell where a noise is coming from inside the cab is futile. I had a thump-twang noise that I swore came from the front of the truck. It turned out to be broken gear teeth in the rear end.
just wondering could your clutch driven cooling fan cause the noise?
I know when mine gets warm enough it makes an interesting Howling/noise, maybe your fan is not working properly?
LOL maybe mine isn't
