Accelerator return spring questions

I need a good correct accelerator return spring for my 54 with a 239 Yblock. I've been using a hardware store spring. It looks a lot different and not as beefy as the one in my 55 239. It does not return my truck to idle quickly enough recently. I checked Dennis carpenter on line and Midfifty's catalog but no luck. (Edit: I just checked Midwest Early Ford. No luck there.)

I found these NOS springs on eBay. Part #7HC-9737 ad says it's for 48-53: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-49-195...8AAOSwo8hfF33k

Part #: TAAA-7523-A. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1953-56-For...IAAOSwlxRfR-hQ. This I think is for a 6 cylinder

Would a clutch or brake pedal return spring work?

A brake or clutch return spring is infinitely heavier than a throttle return spring. You'd break something if you tried to use that. A spring too stiff is hard on throttle shaft bushings. Plus, it's over 13" long. You need TAAE-9737-A 54-55* F-100-600 with 239 without Fordomatic, 4.05" long, 34 coils, .88" diameter.

*It may fit more years, but that's as far as my catalog covers.

That's basically what I was going to say. They are way to heavy.

Yep. Even if you were able to make it work, it would be so stiff, even if you could push your foot down on the gas, you wouldn't want to hold it very long.

A google search of the TAAE part number found this old thread.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-question.html

And here's listings for the replacement spring ND mentioned there.

I have heard of throttle springs breaking with bad results. Apparently the recommended fix for that is a smaller spring inside the bigger one. A double spring.

I believe that's an NHRA safety rule if you want to go drag racing. Nobody likes a stuck throttle going into the sand trap at top speed.

This is exactly what I was going to contribute.
I've had a throttle stick once when I was 16. Whoa Nellie! Make ya pucker and pray!
I have roadside cross a mile from my house - a direct result of a hot rodder in his roadster who ditched it at WOT. 60 mph multiple rollover - final crash investigation ruled cause as failed throttle return.
Belts and suspenders man - buy a doubled return spring!

For a universal spring setup I've had good success with these universal springs from Holley. Good and not too much pedal pressure. They are a stainless steel (not chrome) double inner and outer spring setup and about 4.5" long end to end. Holley 20-89 Holley Chrome Throttle Return Springs | Summit Racing
Not original, but seem to work just fine.

Brian, thanks for bumping this thread to the top.

As I said in the thread about my first drive of the season. I bought a NOS accelerator return spring. It looked too short but I stretched it to fit. I have to push the pedal harder than I was used to. But it returns to idle faster.
