1965 Econoline build?

On the front axel the parts that bolt in the axel that drag link and tie rods bolt to,
can they be swapped from side to? I'm putting rack and need to change them from side to side.
I know I change them but will it still drive ok with a rack on it???
Or can I just put the rack ends where the tie rods go?
Thanks for help.

If you want to keep the solid straight axle, I'm not sure you can use a rack, if the rack is mounted to the frame, when the axle goes up and down the length of the tie rod ends will change. On an independent front suspension the spindles pivot on a lower control arm and keep the tie rod lengths the same threw out the suspension travel..

I'm going to mount the rack on the axel with the tie rods in the same line as straight axel tie rod.
The rod going to the rack will have a slip joint in it.

Have you seen that done before? Not sure I'd want a flimsey aluminum rack hanging down low and bouncing down the road over pot-holes. What are you trying to accomplish with the rack, just power steering?

Back in 1976, Mack trucks had the bright idea to mount the steering box to the axle on their new truck model, Cruiseliner. We had three new ones at the company I drove for. Really nice looking truck, plenty of room inside for a cabover, could hardly keep it in your lane. Too much axle movement for the steering shaft.

Not going power steering just manual. I want to get rid of the original steering box, I hand two different 60s vans that the steering box's broke while I was driving them
back in the 70s. Luckily the crown in the road brought it to the curb real easy when I let off the gas.
I don't want that to happen again is why the rack. They can rebuild the old box's but still use the same old parts.
I have seen one with a rack on it years ago but can't find that anymore. And it was on the axel. The original box's are 59 yrs old.
Well I'm going to do it anyway so I'll let you all know how it turns out. I just thought maybe that someone here has done it.

That's why I'm using a slip shaft.

Just make sure the slip joint goes deep enough, so that when you pop a wheelie with all the power you are going to install, the steering shaft doesn't come apart...lol

Ya that would suck, my son just broke the shaft in his steering box on the 2008 F350 dually on the hyway, he hit a puddle doing 65 and the shaft broke, truck slid sideways, there was a state cop right on his *** that flipped on his blues as soon as it happened, and the truck stopped 90 degrees to traffic and nobody hit anything. He said the wheels where straight when he came to a stop and he backed it into the median. Not sure if it was his lucky day or not.

Yes I will for sure make sure it's long enough because I'm putting a Boss 429 in it.
It's 61 Econo pick up and already has a 460 in it. And I'll also have travel limiters on it.

You have a real Boss 429 for it? What did you pay for that bad boy?
