I have a 1989 C6 with 50,000 pampered miles. The fluid was changed every year or 10k whichever came first. It uses Dexron-III/Mercon ATF, and will get a 28,000 GVW Cooler (or 47,000 GVW depending on which is better). I plan on converting to Pennzoil Mercon-V, which is partially synthetic. Will this cause any problems (leaking past the seals, etc)?
I also have a 1981 AOD with 90,000 pampered miles, 10k/annual fluid changes, and it's using Dexron-III/Mercon. I want to use Mercon-V, and it already has a 32,000 GVW cooler on it. Will I experience any shifting/leaking problems?

I think adding the cooler will do more than switching to a synthetic . Since you change the fluid & filter often that should suffice . I could see going to a synthetic if you towed & hauled a lot . Heat is the biggest problem for any auto trans , If you have a cooler that in my opinion is the best thing you can do for an auto trans .
Oh I know, right now it has a 19,000 GVW cooler and it's not doing the job. The van weighs 4200+ lb. and I figure it needs the largest cooler on the market: 28,000 GVW B&M racing cooler.
But I know Mercon-V is a partial synthetic, so it should hold up better. So you don't think I'll run into any shifting/leaking problems using Mercon-V in those high mileage trannies?

I plan on dropping the pan, changing the filter, draining the converter, and flushing out the cooler. The new fluid will be Pennzoil mercon-V, a partial synthetic mixture approved for use in Ford's modern automatic transmissions (Pennzoil states that it's compatible with systems designed to use Mercon).
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!
