I'm having a shop install an AOD tranny in my '90 F-150. It's been switched from EFI to Carb. and the mechaninc told me that the AOD was partialy computer controlled, and that he would have to spend some time and my money) to rig it to work properly. If I remeber right the only wiring going to the trany is for the neutral start switch, and the speed sensor on the spedometer cable. I don't remember any wiring going straight into the tranny, so I don't see how it could be computer controlled. I know there was an AOD-E at one point with some electronics, but I don't have it. Is this guy trying to rip me off or what? He's already had my truck for a couple of weeks, and I'm getting a little disgruntled about it.
The AOD IS NOT computer controlled in any way. It uses vacuum to shift? I don't know what to say about the neutral start, but I don't think that was hooked to the computer to begin with. I don't think the 1990's had speed sensors, rather they were geared.
In 1995 Ford started producing the 4R70W, nicked the AOD-E...

This guy has taken two weeks to "rig" your AOD tranny. I say bull**** and get it back from him. I can't see why it would take him two weeks to do this. Don't mean to freak you out but I think his ripping you off. However some automatic trannys are computer controlled especially on later models. I would ask around and find out more about this AOD transmission. Good luck to ya!!!!!!!
Thanks for the replys. I'm sure now that he had no reason to do anything electrical to my truck, so he's gonna catch hell when I go to pick it up. When I called and told him I didn't think there were any electronics on it he told me "yeah it's got a five pin connector that deals with torque converter lock up etc..." I know damn well it has no such connector. And the best part is that when I called him about that he also told me not to worry about the wiring because he finally figured out, and was not going to tell me what he did so I wouldn't mess with it. mess with my own truck???? he's supposed to be done tonight so I'll get to see exactly what he did.
Oh, and there is a speed sensor on my truck. It's hooked onto the spedo cable. I think it was for the cruise control.
that speed sensor is for the cruise control. it even lets you have cruise control if you break speedo cable, but it is only a two prong plug. the only other wire i know of on these tranny's is the neutral start switch. ther might be a reverse light switch , but i don't think it is on transmission.
