I have a 46 ford F100 and I'm trying to remove the steering box from the column. The steering box need to be replaced or rebuilt. at this time, I've removed all the bolts from the frame, and the U bolt from the column. I've tapped the box with a mallard to see if it will release, and it doesn't. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG????
That column is all one piece. You can't take it apart, the whole thing has to be removed through the floorboard. Undo the two bolts holding the tube to the dash. Jack up the front so you have room and remove the steering wheel first. I'm guessing you've already taken the pitman arm off.
Couple tips:
Some boxes don't have a reveal edge to access the upper worm bearing cup/race for removal with a drift. Carefully run a bead of weld on the face of the race and it will fall out.
When pressing the worm onto the steering shaft, the shaft needs to be supported from flexing and possible bending. One easy way to do this is to stack up some 2"x4" wood pieces with holes drilled through them to accept the shaft, screw those pieces together to make a solid unit and the shaft will be supported. Another method is to weld a washer or nut onto the shaft for a support. The washer can be left on the shaft or removed...it won't interfere with anything.
Good luck!
