2002 Ranger supercab. The driver's door handle doesn't always want to open the door, kind of. When I pull it up all the way, the door doesn't always open. I figured out the other day that if I push in on the door at the same time, it will open.
At first, I figured it was a typical Ford stretched cable issue, but there isn't a cable there. After looking at it, I wasn't sure how to correct the problem. It feels like it needs to engage sooner to open the door correctly. Any ideas on how to fix it? Or do I just need to replace the mechanism?
Have you tried lubrication the latch and post it attaches to? That would be my first move. Also make sure there is no weather strip or something else keeping the door from closing tightly. I had a seatbelt that didn't retract all the way and got wedged in the door, causing the problem you describe. Otherwise, you may have to take the interior door panel off and look at the mechanism. I don't know what's in there, but there might be something to adjust or lubricate in there.
I actually did pull the panel off, and inspect inside the door. This is how I knew it was not cable driven. Everything seemed to move fine, and I saw no adjustments I could make.
Just opened it up again to check. Door handle is not loose.
Examined the inside of the door thoroughly, and took a few pictures. But after not seeing anything what I could adjust, or anything loose, or not functioning correctly, I moved to lubricate the latch mechanism from the outside of the door. This is when I noticed there is a small wear mark on the lower side of the latch mechanism, from where it is contacting the latch pin on the rear door. So I made a slightly adjustment to the pin, and I'll see if that's the problem.
It seemed, upon a few opening/closing just now, that it is easier to open. Time will tell.
Some of these rods, have a slight bend to them, I know on my 78 fords, they could get stretched or straightened out a tiny bit. If you removed the rod and rebent it, it would work like a charm. Don't know if this will help you.

Um, I stated that I had fixed the problem. So there's no need to do anything else.
