Need a little help troubleshooting.
Started truck ok, After about 10 sec, heard a pop sound and truck died. Tried restarting, only hear a click at the starting solenoid, but no crank. Need some ideas on where to start looking. Don't have time to look at it now, Have to leave for Thanskgiving dinner,
Thanks for your help.

Truck was idling when it made a "pop" noise, or was it in gear?
You are hearing the solenoid click, are you seeing a WTS light in the cluster?
Do you have a multimeter to check for 12v at the starter?
There are two no start flow chats in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder if you want to take a look.

The pop happened when in gear.
Truck started normally. I'll usually back the truck up after start, so I don't have the exhaust stinking up the garage. I made it half way out the garage before I heard a pop and engine died.
Turned key back on, got WTS, dash all looked normal. Went to start and got a single click which sounded like it was coming from the solenoid on passenger fender. Don't know what the pop was when it died. I'll grab a meter tomorrow and see if I get voltage at the solenoid and starter. I'll also see what my battery voltage is at also. They should be good, Odyssey Extreme, 2 1/2 yrs old and usually on battery minder, although not last night.
I did grab a screwdriver real quick to see if I could jumper the large nuts on solenoid to see if it would try to crank, It didn't, but I may not have made a good connection either, since I was on my way out the door.
Anyone have any ideas on what the pop was that started this ?
Just spitballing here, but maybe the positive wire on the starter came loose and shorted to a ground causing the fuse to pop. Did the "pop" sound like it was electrical or mechanical, or could you tell?
A visual inspection and a multimeter DC voltage test at the solenoid and starter should get you pointed in the right direction.
So went out this morning to check a few things.
Batteries are charged
Checked oil- 1/2 way up hash mark- oil cold
Checked small terminal on starter solenoid - have 12v when key turned to start
Checked large terminal on starter solenoid - have 12v.
Checked other terminal on starter solenoid - have 12v when key turned to start.
Checked glow plug relay with meter - ok
Waiting for wife to get home so I can check voltages at starter.

I didn't like the pop/thump whatever it was either. Truck has run great for me all these years, And I try to keep her maintained.
After doing some reading, I was worried about hydro lock - Put a breaker bar and 15/16 socket on crank and was able to manually turn it without a whole lot of force. Did a a full turn on crank, if that was enough.
I am by no means a mechanic. I may be wrong, but so far it seems to point to starter? Could a starter make the pop/thump after it was already started and kill the engine? Still at a loss to what happened.
I would not suspect a starter failure would stall the engine, but we don't know what the popping sound was. It could have been electrical or mechanical at this point.
Being able to turn the engine over by hand is a good thing too, well done on knocking that off the list while waiting for help.
OK, Checked voltage at starter motor, Had 12v battery voltage. Had the wife try to start, got 11.9v at starter motor solenoid.
Tried tapping starter with hammer-still nothing.
I did not hear or feel a click, hum, or anything on starter motor or solenoid when wife was trying to start. Is that normal?
The pop by the way sounded mechanical, not electrical.
Is my next step to pull the starter and have it checked or is there something else I need to do or try first. Everything up to starter seems like it's working.
What's it do there, is there a solenoid mounted on the side of the starter and power goes trough that to the starter? If so, did you check the power on the starter side of the solenoid? If the starter is getting power it should turn or burn. Are the starter bolts tight?

Sorry, It seems I left out the critical part in my last post.
The large bottom post on solenoid with the wire that goes to the starter motor had 11.9 v when trying to start. No turning, no arcing, no burning smell, nothing. Bolts holding starter in place look to be tight. no movement on starter at all
Is there a new starter in my future?
Starting to sound that way, but that still doesn't explain the truck stalling or the pop noise. One step at a time though and a local parts store or starter/alternator rebuilder should be able to test the starter for you at no charge. Once the new starter is in and functioning, we can proceed from there.
EDIT: Looks like Walleye Hunter and I were on the same train of thought and typing at the same time.
