Couple of questions about using Ford Script items on a 53-56 pickup.
I read that you can install the older script tailgates on a 53-56 short bed. What if any MODs must be done to accomplish this? Before I shell out several hundred dollars for a new tailgate I want to be SURE it can be done. I’m using a Midwest Early Ford repo bed without chains and with hidden hinges.
My next question is actually a request for a source. At the shows I’ve seen Ford Script in the front lower bed panel where the bed meets the wooden bed floor and the running boards. As shown in the circled piece in the photo below. Does anyone still make these?
I think the ford script wasn’t on the bed but on the kick up on the running board. They were on the fiberglass running boards. I haven’t seen any in years
Years ago, someone used to make and sell a piece of sheet metal about 12x12 inches, maybe a little bigger, that was stamped with the same Ford script that was used on tailgates. It was great for doing the little custom touches like you're talking about. I haven't seen them for a long time. My guess is they went away when Ford started cracking down on copyright and trademark infringement, and the makers were either told to cease and desist or didn't want to pay license fees on them.
The tailgates in stock form are, afaik, interchangeable, as far as size and fitment in the hole. It's been done plenty. The 53+ beds had a slightly revised latching system over the 51-2, so there may be some difference in the tab on the gate where the chains hook. If you're using a hidden latch, then that won't matter. I don't know about your hidden hinge thing, though. You may need to show us more about that.
Those hinges are called "Hiding Hinges" and they are made by Pros Pick. The first set I installed were not to my liking, followed the directions but when they are mounted using a butt weld they are not very strong. Since then I have installed many of these hinges and in each case I mounted the hinge flush against the pinch weld lip of the bedside and notched the tailgate accordingly. The hinge is now very stable and is tucked into the lip of the tailgate which makes for a very clean install.
